Our Story

The Xpress Alamo was established in 1998 in Canyon Country. Maria cooking in the back and Jose in the front of the house. She took night college classes and taught herself the ropes of the business through trial, error and perseverance. Maria and Jose upgraded to a bigger location in 2003. They changed the name to Margaritas Mexican Grill because of Jose being known for his famous margaritas. Two decades later, they continue to teach us that hard work does pay off. Margaritas Mexican Grill continues to operate successfully with locations in Valencia and Oak Park, California. Together we beat the odds in one of the hardest industries in the world and will continue to create memories for our friends & family in the community we serve.

Where It All Began

Maria was born in the 1960’s in Ensenada, Mexico, a small beach town in Baja California known for ceviche cocktails, fish and steak tacos. At 18 years old, Maria, the oldest of seven siblings, decided to risk everything and left her family in Mexico in search for the American Dream. She migrated to America legally with the highest morals making it her mission to become an American citizen. Maria started in the slums of Los Angeles, California. She had the entrepreneurial spirit and faith knowing that one day, with her strong work ethic and abilities she would start a family and provide for them with a family owned and operated restaurant.

Maria first met Jose while Initially starting as a hostess and cashier at Villa Taxco, Hollywood. Jose was born in Colima, Mexico. He migrated to America for the same reasons as Maria. They realized they shared the same dream and their talents complemented each other. The love sparked and they were together ever since. She later became a renown waitress who could carry up to six hot plates up her arms and always service with her beautiful smile. Maria’s real passion was in the kitchen. She had spectacular recipes, only using the highest quality ingredients. Never taking any shortcuts.

Maria and Jose dreamed of taking advantage of the opportunities America affords, becoming their own boss. Maria was the most independent woman, paired with relentless courage to start her own business with Jose, when the chance finally came to open their first location, they took it.

Unfortunately, Maria’s life was tragically ended too soon. Maria is survived by Jose and her sons, they continue her legacy through the people she touched and through her recipes that feed us now and into the future. Maria raised a family of men that leaned on her as the pillar she was. At Margaritas, we set ourselves apart from all other Mexican restaurants with superior quality and cleanliness, authentic Mexican food and salsas, and our soothing ambiance. Maria will be remembered for her bright smile that lit up a dark room and her unquestionable work ethic.

If you want real, homemade Mexican food – this is the place.

After having been to Margaritas now countless times, I have to give them FIVE STARS. Their Skinny Margaritas with Grand Marnier float are superb, as is their tequila selection, served neat. We had the Codigo, which is tequila aged in red wine barrels – amazing! Their classic dishes, like mole, are 100% hecho en casa. I swear, I don’t know what they do with the chicken, but the spice rub they use is off the charts. If you want real, homemade Mexican food – this is the place. Wifey is the big complainer in the family, and she raves every time we go – in fact, she claims addiction to their salsa/pico de gallo – whatever they put in it. Highly recommended!
